Who ever said that the groom and the groomsmen had to wear tuxedos?
To save a few bucks, buy (or rent) a decent suit. You'll have a suit that can be worn for future engagements instead of having nothing to show for it.
As an added touch, the groom could buy his groomsmen a tie to wear. That way, all of the men can look similar.
